Stage Five Villages
Cacabelos, Pieros 1.7, Valtuille de Arriba 2.4, Villafranca del Bierzo 4.4

Watch for:
Leaving Cacabelos – Soon after crossing the Rio Cúa there is an outdoor display of an 18th century wine press (on the right). Made of chestnut wood and is the size of a small boat.
Pieros –
** Shortly after leaving Pieros, the camino splits near a set of power lines. The detour through Valtuille, favored for its safety and scenery, is to the right. SEE THE WISE PILGRIM APP FOR THE ROUTE VIA THE VALTUILLE VARIATION.
** About 1/4 mile past Pieros enter vineyards, almond and pear trees and oak groves and enter the Burbia valley’s wine-growing area.
Villafranca del Bierzo – St Frances of Assisi passed through 800 years ago and is said to have founded the Iglesia de San Francisco. Pay it a visit. Often doubles as an exhibition hall & its elevation offers a good view. (Wise Pilgrim)
